The sound of an old soul comes with many things. Wise words, tales of the old days and a sense of accomplishment through the years. It is quite a rarity that you meet someone who has the wisdom, words and accomplishments of an old soul without being one. Amy Kuney is a singer songwriter who embodies everything that a songstress should have. Her music is that of the old days. When stories were songs and songs were stories. Her beautiful voice carries every note as her hand strums the guitar in which she holds. Amazing songs, with brilliant music by a beautiful woman. Amy Kuney is everything that a Singer and Songwriter should be. One boy can be so lucky, and I am that lucky because I had the opportunity to talk with Amy. Here is what she had to say.
Turtle: How are you doing today?
Amy Kuney: I’m doing pretty well, how are you?
T: Singer, Songwriter, Pianist and guitarist, is there anything you
can’t do?
AK: I can’t dive. Ha-ha
T: Upon listening to your music, I can only describe it as classic
Singer/Songwriter. I know it doesn’t sound like much of a compliment,
but if you really think about it all of the classic singer songwriters
like Cat Stevens, Carol King, they created a sound and a that shaped
and changed an entire generation. How would you describe your sound
to a first time listener?
AK: I usually describe it as “Fiona Apple on Prozac” Lol…

T: You are young, but you have the voice of an old soul. Your words
are wise and have so much behind them. Do you feel that you embody a
particular style or are you simply just you?
AK: I try to just be me. I’ve heard people describe my music as everything between folk, rock, pop and alternative. Everyone has a different opinion. So yea…it’s just
easier to be myself.
T: You have been playing Piano since the age of 4, what made you stick
with it through all of these years?
AK: I actually quit taking lessons a while ago because I had a hard time reading music. Now I just play by ear and it’s much easier for me. I think piano is the most beautiful instrument there is. Playing a grand piano is a huge high for me :)

T: You have a handful of youtube videos in which you do covers for
artists such as Coldplay, The Moldy Peaches, O.A.R. and Damien Rice.
How did this all start?
AK: I started doing covers while I was recording
my album “Bird’s Eye View”. I didn’t want people to get bored since I
hadn’t released anything in a while. When you’re in the studio, you’re
sort of severed from the rest of the world. I wanted to stay connected
and keep an online presence. So I thought, why not just cover other
songs till the album is released? I had such a great time doing it
that I’ve continued….
T: You toured with Kate Voegele, what was that experience like?
AK: That was so much fun, and I’m about to go on the road with her again. I
love love love her fans. They are so energetic and eager. They’ve even
built a fan site for me! Not everyone is lucky enough to have fans
like that.
T: Some artists enjoy the studio side of music. Being locked a way,
writing new lyrics and new music. Others love to be on stage in front
of a crowd, a thrill that is unmatched. Which side of this coin do
you enjoy?
AK: HaHa… That’s a tricky question. I try to enjoy both. It’s
hard to jump from one to the other…and I see why some artists have
emotional hurdles…It’s tough to step out of a dark studio after 6
months of seclusion and step on a bright stage in front of tons of
people. It can mess with your head.

T: Touring can be taxing and mundane, how do break up the day-to-day
rut while on tour?
AK: I take my laptop and a camera. It’s more fun when
you’re sharing your experiences with other people (via blogs…etc.)
T: What is the silliest thing that has happened to you at a show?
AK: I was playing at a bar one night (one of the first shows I ever played)
and a broom fell (seemingly out of the sky) onto the stage. We think
it may have been lodged somehow into the ceiling, but it barely missed
my head.

T: You are promoting your album “Birds Eye View” what can a listener
expect from the album?
AK: I’m in love with the album. I think it’s beautiful. The producer Scott Seiver is so young, spontaneous and imaginative. He put his all into it, and so did the musicians who played on it. It has a lot of twists and turns. It’s PRETTY but it’s
also dark in some ways. “Angel Tangled in the Telephone lines” is a
pretty song but it’s about something very sad and terrifying. The
album as a whole is bittersweet in my opinion.
T: Do you have any new material you have been working on?
AK: Ooh yes!
T: What does the future hold for Amy Kuney?
AK: Ha-ha…I have no idea. All I know is that I’m having a blast right now. I’m happy and I still have songs coming...as long as I can keep the songs coming…I can keep
going.......Did I make sense just then? Ha-ha.
T: Any final plugs, words of wisdom or shout outs?
AK: Well I want to thank YOU! And all of my youtube, myspace and facebook fans. It’s really the fans that keep me going. I’ve been so lucky to have them. I don’t
think music fans understand how much their support means to artists.
We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.
I huge thank you goes out to Amy Kuney.
